We take a quick glimpse at Baylor cornerback Chance Casey. Read more for FREE inside.
Sophomore
Chance Casey
is one of
Baylor
’s starting cornerbacks on a team that is off to its best start since 1995 (5-2, 2-1). As a true freshman last season, Casey played in all 12 games, and he started the final 6 games at the cornerback position earning All Big-12 freshman honors from numerous publications. Although entrenched in Baylor’s defensive secondary, Casey was a standout running back during his prep career at Crosby High School.
As a senior, the talented 5’11” 185-pound athlete was ranked as the country’s 90th-best running back according to Scout.com. He tallied over 3,000 career rushing yards at Crosby High School, and was a 2-time 300-meter hurdles champion. At Baylor, Casey has been called upon to make a difference for the Bears on the opposite side of the ball.
“Going from running back to corner is a lot different,” said Casey. “There are a lot of things I have learned at the position, and there are a lot of things I still have to learn. There are a lot of techniques and so forth that I am trying to get down and master. It is a little difficult, but I like the challenge.”
Last season, Casey recorded two interceptions returning one for a score against Northwestern State. Through 7 games this season, Casey has one interception, as well as a game-saving play at the end of the game last week against Colorado.
“Coach gave us the signal to play off and to make sure nothing got into the end zone,” Casey said of the last play of the game. “I was back there expecting them to heave something down the field or try some kind of trick. We just had to keep them out of the end zone. Sure enough, he [Colorado quarterback Tyler Hansen] threw up a long bomb, and I just had to swat it down.”
On Saturday, Casey and the Bears will take on the Kansas State Wildcats (5-1,2-1) in Waco. The game is part of the Homecoming festivities on the Baylor University campus. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
