Millard announces he'll stay for senior year

OU fullback Trey Millard

ARLINGTON, Texas — Fullback Trey Millard didn't want to talk about it earlier in the week; he's fine with talking about it now.

The "it" is what he'll do for his senior season, and he's elected to return and skip the option of leaving college early for the NFL Draft.

"Just the camaraderie with some of the guys," Millard said as to why he ultimately decided to come back. "You know, some of my best friends that I'll ever have in my life are playing for this team and they'll be back next year. And definitely just want to finish out senior year here, get my degree and just then see what the next level has to offer."

He'll, of course, have that opportunity—God willing he doesn't suffer an injury in 2013—after the following season.

And so would some others, namely free safety Tony Jefferson and wide receiver Kenny Stills, if they elect to do the same.

But he won't press his decision among those guys, even though he'd like to see them come back.

"I mean that's those guys' decision," Millard said. "They need to go through their own process. And I mean I'd love to have some of those guys back, but I'm not gonna try to really push them either way. That's their own decision. They have to live with it because it's gonna be ultimately their life that they have to live."

It's Millard's life to live, too, and he's chosen a fourth and final season donning the Crimson and Cream uniform.

"I mean I kinda had this [feeling]," Millard said. "I was kinda leaning that way before this game. This game wasn't a major factor in the decision. But having said that, I think a lot of guys don't want to get sent off like this. They don't want their last game to be a blowout like it was today, and I think some of those guys might consider that into their decision."

Time will tell on that.

As for now, one bright spot on a very cloudy evening is Millard's official return next season.
