Washington Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III underwent a surgical procedure to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. The surgery was also scheduled to examine the state of his ACL, which could or could not be torn. The Associated Press was the first to report that the surgery had taken place on Wednesday morning.
Griffin was first injured against the Ravens in Week 14, when defensive tackle Haloti Ngata collided with Griffin's knee while the rookie was attempting to dive for more yardage.
No ligaments were torn then, but Griffin did have to sit the following week. Griffin clearly hasn't been 100 percent since returning from the knee injury, and re-injured the ailing knee against the Seahawks in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
There was some controversy as to whether Redskins coach Mike Shanahan should have pulled Griffin earlier in the game or not.
Griffin, the second overall draft pick in 2012, will be a top candidate for Rookie of the Year honors after a spectacular season that saw him throw for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He also ran for 815 yards and seven touchdowns.
