Flyin to the Hoop Preview

Gavin Schilling

Flyin to the Hoop has always been one of the best events in the country, and again a loaded field of teams is coming to Kettering, Ohio.

Martin Luther King Jr. weekend is always one of the best for high school basketball. Big tournaments and showcases all over the country are going on, and one of the best is Flyin to the Hoop in Kettering, Ohio. This year the field is absolutely loaded as organizer Eric Horstman and his staff have put together a loaded group of teams from Ohio and across the country.

The event tips off on Friday night with two big time games with Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep facing the top team in Ohio, Dayton Thurgood Marshall, and then Huntington (WV) Prep takes on La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere.

In those two games numerous high profile players will be on display with a few being under the microscope in a big way. Specifically Findlay Prep power forward Gavin Schilling and La Lumiere small forward Sam Logwood. Schilling has had a big senior year and even got a recent offer from Michigan State, and is said to be more consistent and productive than ever. Logwood is a junior who is really earning attention, and will have every chance in the world to prove what kind of player he is going up against the nation's No. 1 prospect, Andrew Wiggins. According to La Lumiere head coach Alan Huss, look for Logwood to take on the challenge of defending Wiggins man-to-man.

Saturday at the event sophomore Luke Kennard from Franklin (Ohio) High School will go head-to-head with one of the nation's elite juniors in Justin Jackson out of Texas. This will be a big challenge for Kennard, and will go a long way to determining where he stands as a prospect. Also keep an eye on Centereach (NY) Our Saviour with class of 2015 center Cheick Diallo. Diallo is having a big time year and he could cement his status as one of the best in the country with a good weekend, and that starts on Saturday evening.

Sunday the event is absolutely loaded with high level games and players. Most intriguing might be Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent-St. Mary taking on HCYA out of Houston. That means another big time matchup for Jackson as he goes against one the elite freshman in the country in V.J. King. King has already fared well in one high profile head-to-head battle this year, and he will attempt to do it again.

Also on Sunday Roselle (NJ) Catholic with Syracuse pledge Tyler Roberson as well as super sophomore Malachi Richardson are in action. Richardson is one of the elite shooters in the class of 2015, and it will be interesting to see how far along his game has come since the end of the summer. Then also Cleveland (Ohio) Garfield Heights and Dayton (Ohio) Dunbar means a run and game headed by 2015 point guard A.J. Harris for Dunbar. Keep in mind, Dunbar has been very successful at this event, and this is where Geron Johnson broke out a few years ago.

Finally on Monday two out of town teams really put a capper on the event. Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler is one of the top young squads in the country with Daniel Giddens and Jaylen Brown. They take on a tough and disciplined Centerville (Ohio) squad, and then maybe the top team in the country, Dallas (Tex.) Prime Prep will do battle with Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne which has numerous young guards led by D'Mitrik Trice.
