Cutting Some Slack

Cutting Some Slack

Following a 42-point loss to Baylor on Tuesday, Steve Strain weighs in on the Lady Raiders at this point.

Lady Raider assistant coach Shereka Wright called it "picking their poison" after the game - referring to the Lady Raiders decision to collapse defenders on Lady Bear 6'8" post Brittney Griner, allowing perimeter players to fire mostly uncontested three pointers freely for a good part of the first half.

The strategy was smart.  Baylor lives off scoring mostly in the paint and mostly from Griner, therefore not relying much on three point shooting.  So they fired off eight shots from distance in the first 20 minutes (they only average nine attempts per game the entire season).

Problem was, they made half of those eight, and helped Baylor jump out to a 20-point halftime lead.  Griner ended the night well below her average in scoring, with just 10 on the night, but Baylor still won 89-47.

So the idea was sound and so was the defending of Griner.  There was just one problem, the others on that team are really good too, and they hit their shots.

No need for the Lady Raiders and fans to be hanging their heads low.  Baylor is beating everybody by about 30 points a game and the Lady Raiders have some great opportunities ahead starting this Sunday against Texas.

Those who attend that will be in for a treat.  The Lady Raiders will celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the national championship team by inviting every player from that team back for a celebration that fans won't want to miss.

The current Lady Raiders will be providing a special surprise for that game as well to honor the '93 team.  But since it's a surprise, I can't tell.

So you will have to show up at 2:30 and see for yourself.  It will be a fun day to remember if you love Texas Tech.

See you at the arena!!
