Baylor Recruiting Roundup 5/16

In this edition of the BearsIllustrated Baylor Recruiting Roundup, Annabel Stephan and Kevin Barrera catch up with some 2015 and 2016 recruits, that are interested in the Bears. Come inside to read more about these prospects.

Bears Offer JUCO OT From California

It's been quite a journey for Deya Mhiesen. After playing one year of JUCO ball, at ASA College on the East coast, Mhiesen made the move out west to Pierce CC in Woodland Hills (CA). The move has paid off, as the 6'8, 305 lb OT has received interest from a lot of the big name schools, as well as an offer from Arizona State, and most recently Baylor.

"They (Coach Clements and Coach Bennett) came by the school one day and Coach introduced me to them," Mhiesen said. "After seeing me dunk on Instagram, they loved my athleticism and after watching me practice they loved the footwork I possess as a pass blocker." Mhiesen's athleticism has been something that has attracted some of the top schools from around the country. At 6'8 and 305 lbs, Mhiesen is an imposing figure on the offensive line, something that Baylor certainly appreciates, after having some imposing linemen themselves be drafted in the NFL.

With scholarship offers from ASU and Baylor, Mhiesen is hoping to get out to visit both schools soon. "My and Coach Clem are real close with each other. I'm looking to take an official some time next month. I know Baylor is a Baptist school, but I've never been to Texas even though I have an aunt that lives in Houston." And with graduation coming up in December, when does Mhiesen plan on making his decision? "Honestly, I'm looking to sign on signing day."

Mhiesen will graduate in December and have 3 years to play 2. BearsIllustrated will follow Mhiesen throughout his recruiting process, and will get an update after he visits Baylor in June. (Kevin Barrera)

Denley Making Waves

The 5-foot-9, 170-pound prospect racked up over 1000 yards for fifteen touchdowns as a sophomore and picked up an offer from Baylor in early December.

"They came to one of my games and they called and said they wanted to offer me. They hadn't shown any interest before, but to have my first offer feels really good," he told Scout shortly afterwards.

Walker Lands First Three

On Wednesday, Walker picked up number three from North Texas. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound lineman, who plays end for Shoemaker, is also hearing from a number of other programs.

"I'm hearing from Texas State, Oregon State, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas, and UTSA. I think Texas State could offer soon. They have been by to see me and have been staying in touch," he said.

Haughton Has Successful Surgery

One of the Midlands top prospects is also a Waco Midway athlete in four-star safety Kahlil Haughton. Many programs have been by to see the 6-foot-2, 170-pound athlete, even though he has been out of spring ball with a wrist injury. Haughton, whose offer list includes Penn State, Ohio State, Arizona State, Baylor, Colorado, Duke, Louisville, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, TCU, Texas Tech, and Washington State, had surgery on his wrist and is recovering well. Haughton recently took an unofficial visit to Baylor. (Annabel Stephan)

Galea'I Looks Towards Summer Camps

Galea'i attended the Utes' Junior Day and has plans to camp there this summer.

"I hope I can make it to their camp this summer, the All-Poly camp. I'm also thinking about Baylor, TCU, and Oklahoma State, camps like that," he said.
