Trent Shelton: Setting A High Standard

Trent Shelton: Setting A High Standard

A wide receiver like Baylor's Trent Shelton is a quarterback's best friend, an offensive coordinator's dream, and a defensive corrdinator's worst nightmare. With blazing speed, soft hands, and precise body control, Trent Shelton will be able to showcase his talents his senior year.

Don't let the stats fool you. Trent Shelton is perhaps the most NFL-ready wide receiver on the Baylor Bears' roster. Standing 6-3 211, Shelton is Baylor's most experienced wideout, and arguably the team's fastest offensive player.

Shelton, a North Crowley High School (Ft. Worth, Texas) standout, is entering his senior year at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and all signs point to this being Shelton's breakout year. The Baylor Bears have installed a spread offense under new offensive coordinator Lee Hays. With the possibility of the Baylor quarterbacks throwing close to 50 or 60 times a game, Shelton is sure to improve on his junior season statistics that saw him catch 39 passes for 452 yards.

Watching Shelton, it is easy to understand what makes him Baylor's offensive breakout candidate for the 2006 college football season. Shelton currently has recorded at least one reception in 33 consecutive games, and is close to unseating former Baylor Bear wide receiver Reggie Newhouse for the team record. Shelton needs at least one reception in Baylor's next two contests to stand alone atop the list.

Expect more from Shelton this season as the senior wide receiver will have the Big 12's most experienced quarterback in Shawn Bell throwing him the football, as well as fellow senior wide receiver Dominique Zeigler back in the mix on offense.

For the past 4 years, Shelton has demonstrated a work ethic and team-first mentality that has placed him in a leadership role on this Baylor Bears football team. The senior wide receiver will definitely be one to watch, and definitely one that has set a high standard during his collegiate career at Baylor University.
