Derrick Cash, 6-0, 216, Sr-3L - One of the more consistent players on the team over the past four seasons, Derrick Cash started all 12 games last season. Derrick led the entire team in solo tackles with 50, and 14 more assisted tackles put him in second place behind Ethan Kelley with 64 total tackles. Derrick’s best game came against the Longhorns when he had 10 solo tackles for the game, and even managed to force a fumble. He certainly possesses the size and speed new Coach Guy Morriss is looking for in his new secondary. Cash was also second on the team in interceptions with 2, but first in return yardage with 60 yards.
Maurice Linquist, 5-11, 202, Fr-RS - A newcomer, Linquist is penciled in as Cash’s back-up at this OS position. As yet, there has been no determination of just how many defensive backs will be available as some may be slated to forego spring practice in order to work on academics. This will allow several newcomers opportunities to show what they can do.
Willie Andrews, 5-10, 186, So-1L - Willie didn’t start a single game last season, but played in all 12. He put up 22 solo tackles and got 4 assists, to give him 26, tying him with Charles Mann in 18th place among all tackles. His best game was also against the Longhorns where he had 6 solo tackles. Willie had one pass interception (Texas Tech) which he returned for 27 yards.
Larry Bynum, 5-11, 191, Sr-1L - Larry also played in all 12 games last season, and drew the start for the game against Texas Tech. Bynum only had 7 tackles on the season (6 solo, 1 assist), so will be looking to improve quite a bit in 2003. Larry also had one sack for a loss of 9 yards in the game against Tulsa.
Maurice Lane, 5-11, 183, So-1L - Maurice missed the Kansas game with an injury last season, but started the remaining 11. He had 39 solo tackles and 8 assists, giving him a total of 47, good enough to put him in a tie for sixth among all tacklers with LB Stephen Sepulveda. Maurice’s best game was against Tulsa when he had 8 total tackles (6 solo, 2 assisted). Maurice was among three players tied for first in fumble recoveries with 2 each, and he also intercepted a pass.
Danielle McLean, 6-0, 202, Sr-3L - Danielle played in all 12 games last season, starting three of them. He had 23 solo tackles and 8 assisted, giving him 31 on the season. His best effort came against Kansas when he logged 9 solo tackles. McLean had one pass interception on the year.
Tyson Hampton, 6-0, 193, Jr-1L - Tyson actually started the first game against CAL, but that would be his only start, but he did play in another 8 games. He had 18 tackles on the season (13 solo, 5 assisted), and his best game was in the start against CAL when he had 4 solos and 3 assists for 7 total tackles.
Anthony Arline, 6-2, 186, Fr-RS - Every fan has anticipated the “coming out” of Anthony Arline ever since he was signed with the 2002 Class. Anthony redshirted last season while still rehabbing a knee.
Ahmad Rhodes, 5-9, 170, Sr-1L - Ahmad played in 10 games last season, starting none of them. He only had two tackles on the season, so his contributions to last season were at best, minimal.
Matt Johnson, 5-10, 173, Sr-3L - Matt started all 12 games last season, finishing 8th on the team with 45 tackles (38 solo, 7 assisted). His best games were against New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas when he had 6 total tackles in each game. He also forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.
James Todd, 6-0, 173, Fr-RS – James redshirted last season.
Michael Boyd, 5-10, 169, So-1L - Michael only played in 3 games last season; CAL, Samford, and Texas. He didn’t log a single tackle, intercept a pass, or cause or recover a fumble.
