Scout.com reported BYU assistant Jeff Grimes was in Boulder over the weekend to interview for the vacant offensive line coaching job. Late Monday, the Salt Lake Tribune cited sources close to the BYU program that indicated Grimes had accepted the job in Boulder.
It is believed Colorado will make an official announcement once Grimes' hire is approved by the university in the coming days.
Chris Strausser, who came with Dan Hawkins from Boise State prior to the 2006 season, took a job coaching tight ends at Boise last week.
Grimes and Hawkins were assistants at Boise State during the 2000 season, a year before Hawkins took over the head coaching job there. The following season, Grimes joined the Arizona State staff, where he served as running game coordinator and offensive line coach. He was on the staff at ASU with current CU offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich for three seasons.
Since 2003, Grimes has coached the offensive line at BYU.
Grimes was born and raised in Texas. He lettered four years as an offensive tackle at UTEP, then coached high school football in El Paso, and was a GA at both Rice and Texas A&M.
Grimes' Texas roots could be significant because CU struck out recruiting the Lone Star State this cycle for the first time since 1983. Hawkins said on Signing Day the staff intends to continue its efforts to make inroads into Texas high schools.
The Buffs are scheduled to begin spring practices March 12.
